Isosorbide mononitrate and dinitrate are nitrates used to treat and
prevent angina (chest pain) and to relieve heart failure. They work by relaxing blood vessels, so blood can flow more easily. The pain of coronary
heart disease (angina) usually occurs when the heart requires more blood and oxygen than the blood vessels supplying the heart can deliver.
Isosorbide mononitrate popular brand names include Imdur and Ismo. Isosorbide dinitrate popular brand names include Isordil and ISDN.
There are numerous other brand names and generics for these nitrates, such as: Dilatrate SR, Duride, ISMN, Isoket, Medocor and Monoket.
Isosorbide mononitrate is prescribed to prevent angina pectoris (a crushing chest pain that results when partially clogged arteries restrict the flow of needed oxygen-rich blood to the
heart muscle). This medication does not relieve angina attacks already underway. Isosorbide dinitrate treats attacks of angina and prevents attacks of angina from occurring.
