Classes and uses of antipsychotics and other related drugs |
Classes of Antipsychotic Medications:
Antipsychotic is applied to a group of drugs used to treat psychosis. Conditions for which antipsychotics might be used include schizophrenia, mania and delusional disorder.
Antipsychotics also have some effects as mood stabilizers, leading to their frequent use in treating mood disorder (particularly bipolar disorder) even when no signs of psychosis are present.
These drugs are also referred to as neuroleptics.
There are currently two main types of antipsychotics in use:
the typical antipsychotics and atypical antipsychotics. Although a new class of antipsychotic drugs has been discovered, known as partial dopamine agonists.
One such drug in this class Abilify (aripiprazole) has been approved by the FDA.
Typical antipsychotics (also known as conventional antipsychotics or conventional neuroleptics) are a class of antipsychotic drugs used to treat psychosis (particularly schizophrenia) and are generally being
replaced by atypical antipsychotic drugs. Typical antipsychotics may also be used for the treatment of acute mania, agitation, and other conditions.
Atypical antipsychotics (also known as second generation antipsychotics) are a class of prescription medications used to treat psychiatric conditions.
Sub-Classes and Types of Anticonvulsants
Anticonvulsants are a class of drugs indicated for the treatment of various types of seizures associated
with seizure disorders such as epilepsy, a neurological dysfunction in which excessive surges of electrical
energy are emitted in the brain, and other disorders. Some anticonvulsants are indicated for other
medical uses. Some hydantoins, such as Phenytoin, Common Brand Dilantin, are also used as skeletal
muscle relaxants and antineuralgics in the treatment of neurogenic pain. (nerve pain)
Some anticonvulsants and antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) are used in psychiatry for the treatment of bipolar disorders (manic-depression).
Main Types of Anti Convulsants / Seizure Medications: Barbiturates - Benzodiazepines - GABA Analogues - Hydantoins - Oxazolidinediones - Phenyltriazines
Succinamides - Others
