 Famvir (Famciclovir) is used to treat herpes zoster (shingles), herpes
virus cold sores (herpes labialis) and to treat and prevent further
outbreaks of genital herpes in people with normal immune systems.
Famciclovir is also used to treat returning herpes simplex infections of the
skin and mucous membranes in people with HIV.
Famciclovir will not cure herpes and may not stop the virus spreading to other people, but it
relieves the tingling, pain and itching and helps the sores (if any) to heal faster. It also helps
keep herpes viruses latent and may eliminate further outbreaks
of herpes (in some people). Famvir is a common brand name of Famciclovir, made by the Novartis Pharmaceuticals.
