Depakote is one of several brand names for divalproex sodium (also known
as Valporic or Valproic acid and Sodium Valproate). This drug has a number of uses: it is used as an anticonvulsant and mood stabilizer to treat certain
types of seizures and convulsions associated with epilepsy and for treating bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Valproic acid is also used to prevent migraine headaches, it also works
against HIV by releasing the virus from resting cells so other anti-HIV medicines can attack it.
Brand names include: Depakote, Depakene, Depakine Crono, Divaa, Encorate Crono, Epival,
Epilim, Exibral, Logical, Milzone, as delayed or extended release (ER) tablets and capsule form.

Do not take Divalproex : Valproic Acid if you have liver disease or a urea cycle disorder.
This medication may not be appropriate for patients with any of these disorders:
history of head injury, brain disorder or coma bleeding or blood clotting disorder family history of a urea cycle disorder family history of infant deaths with unknown cause
Inform your doctor if any of the above conditions or disorders apply.
This Medication Causes Drowsiness Avoid other drugs that cause drowsiness or sleepiness, such as other anti seizure medicines,
alcohol, pain medications, muscle relaxants, antidepressants and anti anxiety agents.
Depakote : Valproic Acid Side Effects The following side effects have been reported:
drowsiness, weakness, diarrhea, constipation, upset stomach, tremors. depression, anxiety or other emotional changes. enlarged breasts, changes in menstrual periods.
hair loss, weight changes, vision changes. skin rash, including peeling blistering skin. unusual or unpleasant taste in the mouth.
If any of the following serious side effects occur, seek immediate medical attention: Nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, loss of appetite, fever, dark urine, clay colored stools.
Jaundice (yellowing skin or eyes). Allergic reactions: difficulty breathing, hives, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat. These may be early signs of liver damage or pancreatitis.
