Esomeprazole and brand names Nexium, Nexpro and Sompraz are
proton pump inhibitors, that block a specific enzyme essential to the production of stomach acid. It begins reducing acid within an hour of
administration and is prescribed for the short-term (4 to 8 weeks) treatment of GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or acid reflux).
Esomeprazole may also be given to prevent gastric ulcers caused by infection with helicobacter pylori (H. pylori), or by the use of nonsteroidal
anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Nexium can also be prescribed for Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome.
