 Codeine is an opioid analgesic also known as a narcotic analgesic, which
relieves moderate to severe pain by acting on the central nervous system.
Opioids mimic the effects of naturally occurring pain reducing chemicals
(endorphins). They combine with the opioid receptors in the brain and block
the transmission of pain signals. Therefore, even though the cause of the pain
may remain, less pain is actually felt. Codeine is produced by methylating morphine and comes alone or in combination with other pain medications
(some codeine combinations also include caffeine). Examples of codeine are:

Analgiplus, Talvosilen, Klipal, Azur, Dolofrix, Paracod, Co-codamol, Cod Efferalgan and Codeisan.
Diclofenac and Codeine, such as: Combaren and Oxa Forte. Pure codeine phosphate brands
include: Codeinum Phosphoricum, Codeine Perduretas (Time Release) and Codicompren Retard.

Precautions Before Taking Codeine
Opioid analgesics such as codeine relieve pain by acting directly on the central nervous system.
However, this can also lead to serious side effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness, sedation
and physical or mental dependence. Like all narcotics, they may become habit-forming if used
over long periods and have the potential for abuse.
Other side effects include constipation, nausea, vomiting, shortness of breath, abdominal pain,
allergic reactions and itching.
