Norethindrone or Norethisterone is a progestin, containing a type of female hormone known as progesterone. Norethindrone acetate has
various functions and depending on the brand or dosage prescribed,
can be used for several different purposes or menstrual disorders, such as: birth control (contraception), to treat menstrual disorders like endometriosis.
To treat abnormal vaginal bleeding caused by hormone imbalance, to treat an irregular menstrual cycle or lack of menstrual periods (amenorrhea) to restore menstruation.
Norethindrone is sometimes used to advance or delay periods (monthly bleeding) if required by personal circumstances and also in IVF treatment (in-vitro fertilization) where norethisterone
controls the timing of the preceding menstrual cycle and therefore the timing of the IVF cycle.
Not all brands are an exact substitute for one another.
Norethindrone or Norethisterone brand names include: Aygestin, Camila, Errin, Jolivette, Nor-QD, Norlutin, Ortho-Micronor, Primolut N and Primolut Nor.

Warnings about Norethindrone Therapy Aygestin, Jolivette, Primolut N and the various other brands of Norethindrone/Norethisterone
increase the risk of blood clots, which can lead to phlebitis, breathing and vision problems or stroke. Symptoms of clot-related disorders can be pain with swelling, warmth and redness in a
leg vein, coughing or shortness of breath, loss of vision or double vision, migraine or weakness or numbness in an arm or leg. If any of these symptoms are experienced, stop taking the
medication and seek medical advice immediately.
Norethindrone Side effects Norethindrone may cause nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, depression, sleeplessness
or irritability. These effects should disappear as the body adjusts to the medication. If these side effects persist or become severe, seek medical advice.
Also notify your doctor if you experience any of the following while taking Norethindrone: dizziness or fainting, sudden severe headache, changes in vision, numbness or tingling in the
arms or legs, swelling of the hands or feet, acute chest pain, shortness of breath, pain in the calves (accompanied by swelling, warmth or redness). Changes in vaginal bleeding (spotting, breakthrough bleeding, prolonged or complete stoppage of bleeding).

What is endometriosis ?
Endometriosis is a condition where the endometrium (the lining of the uterus) does not shed properly and attaches to the outside of the uterus or other areas such as ovaries or bowels.
The main symptoms of endometriosis are: Dyspareunia (pain on intercourse) Dysmenorrhoea (painful periods) Pelvic and abdominal pain Abnormal bleeding (Norethindrone is not used to control bleeding caused by fibroids or cancer)
Pelvic pain Infertility Feelings of pressure and discomfort in the pelvis Occasional bowel disturbance.
